Have you seen the video of Greta Thunberg when she spoke at the UN Climate Summit? Since it was uploaded in September 2019, the video was watched millions of times and inspired young people worldwide to rally for climate action. Nowadays, more and more people are becoming more aware of climate change and its impacts than ever before. At Asia Pulp and Paper, we also know that it is our shared responsibility to address these issues and help preserve our environment.
But why do we care? Well, because it’s part of our vision. We need to preserve the Earth because we only borrow it from our next generation. Their future is in our hands. It is up to us to make sure that there will be a brighter tomorrow for them. So conserving the environment is essentially the same as protecting ourselves and our future generation. And as a global pulp and paper company that operates in more than 150 countries, we acknowledge the significant role we could play to save the Earth.
On top of that, we value the environment as our business relies on sustainable operations, which require various resources such as pulpwood fiber, energy, and water. So, to maintain sustainability in our business, we must carefully and responsibly manage these resources. Furthermore, the future of our employees, who are integral to our success, also depends on the company. So it’s a virtuous cycle!
Therefore, after launching our Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 in 2012, we made commitments to become a sustainable company; a company that cares for business continuity and environmental conservation. A company that conducts business responsibly by growing our tomorrow.
As the backbone of our plan, we set up our Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) as a tool to ensure that we are staying on track for our mission. One example from our FCP is to only source traceable fiber from legal or certified suppliers that demonstrate sustainable forestry practices. This way, we can be sure that they do not come from illegal loggings that could damage the forest.
There are many other things that we do to secure a better tomorrow for us, and you can learn more about them here. We will continue to research and implement new strategies to protect the environment, including the people and wildlife within it. We realize that tackling environmental issues is tough and time-consuming. But it is not a one-person problem. It’s a problem for all of us because the Earth is our home. So let’s continue to put our efforts together to save the environment because our planet is worth fighting for.
